FEAR… a bump in the night
One of the maxims of hypnosis is that imagination is the language of the mind and emotion is the fuel that powers it.
Whether one sees a shadow in the dark, perceives noises while alone in the house or is anxious about some difficultly in our personal or professional life feeling is preceded by imagination. The feeling might be described as anxiousness or stress but the emotion is fear. As we become more fearful adrenalin begins pumps into our body and the sensation of muscle tightening or heart racing become noticeable. The process of resolving fear is the same for all emotions whether anger, guilt, being overwhelmed or frustrated.
First step is to identify the correct emotion, fear; second step, clarify the cause; third, check reality, is there actually something to fear; fourth, determine an effective response. Though each step is critical to resolving unpleasant emotions, ineffective responses are what gets us to distracters like eating, smoking, drinking, shopping, gambling… whatever.
Hypnosis, whether to stop smoking, lose weight, overcome stress or situational anxiety, assists the client in being able to better identify the emotion creating the unpleasant feeling and to then to develop an effective response which resolves the issue rather than simply diverting attention from the discomfort.
