“Don’t go in the puddle” “Don’t worry” “Don’t touch me”
COVID-19 taught us all the word “don’t.”
Listen to the evening news, the politician, as they speak about what they will not do rather than what they will do. “I will never raise your taxes” gets bellowed out and if you are like me, you immediately hear, yup he’s going to raise my taxes.
The problem is that the human mind parses, cancels out, the negative word and changes the meaning of the statement.
The child cautioned to not go in the puddle parses the word, not, and hears only, GO IN THE PUDDLE; it’s how our mind works.
Similar to being told, do not to think of a bright yellow jeep, the mind immediately first creates the yellow image and then somehow attempts to block or change it into the “not” version; it’s a thought virus.
Most importantly, a thought virus invades the way we talk to ourselves.
When I ask people what they want almost universally they tell me what they do not want. I don’t want to procrastinate, I don’t want to be lazy, I don’t want to be lonely, I don’t want to be fat, I don’t want to smoke… tell me what you do want not what you do not want, I urge them.
Hypnosis is inner thinking, to be able to step aside and to look at ourselves impartially as though we were seeing someone else, a dear friend.
Hypnosis can allow you to listen to your own thinking, to move from negative, destructive self-talk to supporting positive thinking that is strengthening and empowering.
We sometimes believe what other people tell us but we always believe what we tell ourselves.
Begin today to say and think what you mean, not what you do not mean. Change your thinking, change your life.
