Imagine laying in the preparation room for an operation, a nurse introduces themself to you and provides some helpful information, “Some people experience a sore throat for a few days after the operation or feel nauseous from the anesthesia.”  Helpful information, perhaps not.

Be assured, if you suggest to patients in a heightened state of concern, a perfect hypnotic moment, that they will have a certain experience, they are nearly certain to have it.

During a heightened state of anxiety or fear our mind easily accepts suggestions and instructions, particularly from perceived authority figures.

When you were a small child there may have been a time when you stumbled and skinned your knee, your mother kissed the booboo and you felt better.  As an adult you may have gone to the doctor with an ache or pain, the doctor examined you, looked you in the eye, and said, “You’re perfectly fine, this is nothing at all, and the ache seemed much better.  How different it would have been if the doctor frowned and said, “Oh boy, this is awful,” you probably would have dropped to the floor then and there.

Imagine a different set of surgical suggestions, “After your procedure you will feel calm and relaxed, your throat soft and lubricated, thinking about eating your favorite food.  If there is some slight sensation in your throat it is perfectly normal and will pass rapidly”.  Three positive suggestions during a time of heightened susceptibility, are calmness and relaxation, soft and lubricated throat, and hunger.  Do you know that it is not possible to be nauseous and hungry at the same time?

Remember the skinned knee story, what the mind believes has an enormous effect on what the body feels.  It is well to be properly prepared for the future but self-confidence and positivity is fundamentally better than fear and despair.

Change your thinking, change your life.
