When feeling stuck, change your perspective to see the journey as a process for growth, not just a destination.
Engaging with a client is a two-way street; I learn from them as well.
One client mentioned that during a trip, she focused on the journey and the experience of getting there, while her partner was focused on reaching the destination. Her partner viewed the experiences of the trip as impediments to reaching the goal, and getting lost along the way led to exasperation, stress, and recrimination.
In contrast, my client was excited about the potential for unexpected adventure.
I can still remember my last dog, a standard poodle. Every morning, it would shake itself off and stand on the tips of its toes, staring intently at me – as if asking, “Wow, what are we going to do today?” During our walks, the dog loved jumping into patches of undergrowth and watching the lizards scatter.
There was always another adventure waiting in the next block.
Chaucer mentioned in the Canterbury Tales that on a long journey, it is often comforting to change one’s seat. We are all on a journey, and unexpected things will happen. Feeling stuck and unable to move on might mean that we need to change our perspective and see the journey as a process rather than just a conclusion – a time for growth rather than feeling already grown.
“Stop, look, listen” is a common message at railroad crossings, and it might just be good advice for traveling in general.
