Went for a walk on the beach the other morning, have not done that for years even though I live only a few blocks from the ocean. I actually sat in the sand and watched the bathers, spring break now in South Florida and there were a number of younger folks… in South Florida younger usually means under fifty and these were under twenty.
I learned a couple of things: walking in the soft sand is a lot harder than I remembered, another reason to keep getting into the gym and as I sat on there on the sand a young guy came up to me and asked if I was OK, had seen me sitting there for a while and was checking on the old guy. We are all so busy all the time, just sitting for a moment was a subject of concern.
Consider that in the first three years of our life the brain has grown to nearly 80% of what it will every be, by five years our brain is 90% of the size it will ever become. Education, environment, life experiences will create who we will become emotionally but those early years become a foundation of our lives. If we are fortunate to have been well nurtured in those early years our temperament is likely to be more resilient, better able to adapt and respond to challenges.
A child is nurtured, an adult must become self-nurturing. Our neurological system, our ability to cope with the vicissitudes of inevitable experiences depends on it. Whether it is simply talking a walk around the block to smell the roses, change your routine in a simple way occasionally, sit on the front porch in the quiet or marvel as you watch the noise and bustle of the city… but simply stop.
For an occasional instant, find a way to change what you are doing, seeing, hearing…nurture yourself.
